Understanding HP, kW, and PS

Three different units measure engine power worldwide and the differences cause constant confusion. Mechanical horsepower (HP or bhp) was defined by James Watt in the 18th century as 550 foot-pounds per second — this is the standard in the United States, United Kingdom, and Japan. Kilowatts (kW) are the SI metric unit and the official standard in the European Union, Australia, and China — all EU vehicle specifications list power in kW since 2010. Torque vs Horsepower

Torque is a rotational force measured in Newton-meters (Nm) or pound-feet (lb-ft). Horsepower is the rate at which that force does work — it equals torque multiplied by rotational speed.
