How Does the Formula Work?

The Chinese Gender Predictor is based on a traditional chart allegedly discovered in a royal tomb near Beijing over 700 years ago during the Qing Dynasty. The chart cross-references the mother's lunar age at the time of conception with the lunar month of conception to produce a prediction of the baby's gender. While it has no scientific validity, it remains one of the most popular gender prediction methods worldwide and is used as a fun cultural tradition by expectant parents.

The Origin and History

According to legend, the Chinese Gender Chart was found in an ancient tomb by a Chinese scientist during the Qing Dynasty (1644–1912). The chart was supposedly kept in the Institute of Science of Peking and later brought to other countries. While the historical details are difficult to verify, the chart has been used in Chinese culture for centuries. It is based on the Chinese lunar calendar system, where both the mother's age and the conception timing are calculated according to lunar months rather than the Gregorian calendar.

Lunar Age vs Gregorian Age

The key concept in the Chinese Gender Chart is lunar age. In Chinese tradition, a baby is considered one year old at birth, and everyone gains one year on Lunar New Year (Chinese New Year) rather than on their individual birthday. This means a person's lunar age is typically one or two years higher than their Western age. This calculator uses the simplified approximation of adding one year to the Gregorian age, which is the most common method used in online Chinese gender predictors. A more precise calculation would require converting the exact birth date and conception date to the Chinese lunar calendar.

Scientific Accuracy

Multiple scientific studies have examined the accuracy of the Chinese Gender Chart. A 2009 study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology examined birth records and found that the chart predicted gender correctly approximately 50% of the time — exactly what you would expect from random chance. The biological sex of a baby is determined by the sperm cell (carrying either an X or Y chromosome) that fertilizes the egg, a process unrelated to the mother's age or the month of conception. Despite the lack of scientific support, the chart remains popular as a harmless and fun tradition.
